The McNaughton Center Saver has proven to
be one of the most revolutionary tools ever developed for
the art of woodturning. Widely used by professionals and
hobbyists alike, the M8 system is the most verstatile coring
system available. Unlike most systems, the M8 does not limit
the craftsman to coring hemispheres. It allows the user
to create many various shapes - from platters, to standard
bowls, to vases, to picture and mirror frames. The straight
tool can also be used as a parting tool.
Five configurations of this ever-popular
tool are available. Each includes a pin gate, restraint
yoke, toolpost, handle and a selection of blades, as follows:
Micro Set: Micro System is designed to meet
the needs of turners with small low powered lathes. It can
be successfully used on lathes powered by motors of 1/2"
hp and less. It includes 3 curved blades plus one straight
blade of 3mm x 16mm (1/8" x 5/8") cross-section.
The four pin gate supplied accepts both Micro and Small
centre saving blades and the integrated hollowing gate can
be used with Kelton 8mm (5/16") and 10mm (3/8")
hollowers. The system is supplied with a 10" KH2 quick-change
handle and a 16mm (5/8") column but other sizes are
available upon request.
Small Set: 3 curved blades plus one straight
blade of 5mm x 19mm (13/64" x 3/4") cross section.
The standard 5 pin gate supplied accepts Micro, Small, Standard
and Large centre saving blades. The set is supplied with
10" KH2 quick-change handle and a 25mm (1") diameter
column. Other column sizes are available upon request (e.g.
30 mm, 1/1/4"). In addition, a longer post is available
for the Powermatic lathe.
Standard Set: 3 curved blades plus one straight
blade of 6mm x 25mm (1/4" x 1") cross section.
The five pin gate supplied accepts Micro,Small, Standard
and Large centre saving blades. The set is supplied with
a 10" KH2 quick-change handle and a 1" diameter
column. Other column sizes are available upon request (e.g.
30 mm, 1/1/4") In addition, a longer post is available
for the Powermatic lathe.
Large Set: 2 curved blades plus one straight
blade of 6mm x 31mm (1/4" x 1.1/4") cross section.
The five pin gate supplied accepts Micro, Small, Standard
and Large centre saving blades. The set is supplied with
a 10" KH2 quick-change handle and a 25mm (1")
diameter column. Other column sizes are available upon request
(e.g. 30 mm, 1/1/4"). In addition, a longer post is
available for the Powermatic lathe.
Combined Set: 3 curved blades plus one straight
blade from the Standard set and 2 curved blades plus one
straight blade from the large set with the stanfard five
pin gate described above. The set is supplied with a 10"
KH2 quick-change handle and a 25mm (1") diameter column.
Other column sizes are available upon request (e.g. 30 mm,
1/1/4") and a longer post is available for the Powermatic
lathe.
Because this system is so flexible in terms
of the size and shape of core that can be taken with any
particular blade, it is difficult to specify any sort of
exact size range for each set. The following guidelines,
while by no means "absolute" may help:
The Micro system has been designed for
those whose work is probably in a size range from 100mm
to 200mm (4" to 8") in diameter or those wishing
to take very small cores as part of nested sets where larger
blades are used for the remaining cores. If you typically
work with blanks in the size range 100 mm to 250 mm(6"
to 10") diameter, then the Small set will probably
fulfill your needs. For work in the 200 mm to 350 mm (8"
to 14") range, then you might opt for the Standard
system. If you routinely handle work in the 250mm to 450
mm(10" to 18+") diameter range, then the Large
or even the Combo would be preferred.
Note that additonal blades may be purchased
to extend the range of your basic set, up or down as needed.
